Chiapas Revolution Essays - Chiapas, , Term Papers
Chiapas Revolution 1994 proved to be radical year in Mexican history. There were three major assassinations of political figures, President Carlos Salinas signed the NAFTA agreement, and a small revolution began in the Pacific Southwest of Mexico. Although all of these a major impact on Mexican society none played out to the public greater then Zapatista uprising in Chiapas. Several hours before 1994 became the New Year the Mexican state of Chiapas was thrust upon the international scene as the Zapatista guerilla army seized control of the city of San Cristbal de las Casas and five towns in the surrounding Chiapas mountain region. The guerillas were bands of ethnic Mayan Indian peasants from the highlands of Chiapas. These indigenous people are among the poorest in all of Mexico, and are basically an agrarian culture. The first glimpse of the struggle seemed to mimic similar guerilla activities in nearby Central American regions. When reexamined the organization and careful planning of the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN) showed that these rebels, composed mostly of teenagers and young adults from ethnic Mayan groups, didnt resemble their neighbors. What at second glimpse appears to be another ethnic conflict in a decade of ethnic uprising around the world, is both that and more. The roots of the struggle do in fact spring the history of racism and oppression of the Mayan Indians. The war also is an attack on mistreatment of the poor of all ethnic backgrounds throughout Mexico. To clearly analyze the reason and the will of this rebellion a history of the Indians and the Mexican political actions must be examined. The Indians are of Mayan ancestry and have made their living off of farming. Still to this day all products and tools are handmade by the Indians in their villages. Land is the quintessential possession in their culture. Not only does it determine wealth, but also land has strong religious aspects and is considered holy. The Indians believe that land is ancestral private property passed down to them by sacred ancestral generations. The roots of the present day conflict extend back to the Conquistador era. Chiapas is made up of three regions main regions. The central region is a high elevation plateau composed of steep rugged terrain, known as the Chiapas highlands. To the Southwest are fertile Pacific lowlands, and to the East is the Lacandon jungle. The ancestors made the fertile Pacific lowlands their center of their civilization. Upon the arrival of the Spaniards the native people were pushed out of the lowlands and up into the highlands over a period of 500 years. The thin rocky soil proved to be insufficient for a majority of the Indians and many migrated East to the Lacandon jungle. The soil their was equally as bad as the highlands and was only capable of supporting a year or two of planting. The slow loss of land set the stage for a rebellion. Since land and farming is so important to the Indian way of life Political Issues

English - Essay Example The tone and the use of words are not very scholarly. This can be attributed to how the essay is grounded on inference and not on facts. To illustrate, a students adapts a more confident tone if he knows he has studied for a report and is prepared with evidence if indeed a panelist asks questions. On the other hand, a students who is unprepared lacks confidence in what he has to say, and in turn resorts to using colorful and flowery words with the hope that it can influence the panelists to believe in his statements no matter how empty and trivial they are. The 2 students are much like the 2 articles compared side by side. A good article is the former, but this essay proves to be no different from the latter. The essay is built on a frail foundation not strong enough to withstand scrutiny, if analogy should be used. The essay presents assumptions that children who are considered beautiful are seen as more behaved and it is also assumed that men and women who are physically attractive climb the corporate ladder faster than their counterparts who are not gifted with good looks or admirable physique. Another assumption is that older patients are given more time and attention if they are viewed as possessing good looks. Forestry Commission Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Forestry Commission - Essay Example The isolated rural of England, Scotland, and Wales consisted of three thousand employees made it even more difficult to integrate changes. (McCann, 2003, p. 948.) The leaders in charge had been accustomed to doing things the old way. Some realized that in order to implement change and to train their workforce, they had to change themselves. This was necessary in order to create teamwork instead of orders coming down from up top without the involvement of others. (McCann, 2003, p. 948.) The author reports that a manager in Forest District B stated that he realized that in order to create an environment that was team-based, he had to change himself. (McCann, 2003, p. 950.) Consultants helped managers analyze their own attitudes and behaviors. It was believed that at every level, the organizational culture was one of blame and that managers and their workforce would point the finger at everyone else. Leadership events were coordinated to help all transition from the old way of doing things to the new way. Regardless of these efforts, some managerial still refused to change and some even quit. Fifteen selected to retire early and some managers were moved to other posts. (McCann, 2003, p. 948.) Due to the company's extremely hierarchical system, some were skeptical and even reluctant to change. Although the change process was gentle, team members still feel that despite the new district team approach, the entire company is still under the old way. They feel that although they are encouraged to voice their opinion but even so, people are afraid to really say what they think due to fear of the consequences. So they believe that although their district has made some changes, the overall company is still under the old system so there is much skepticism and lack of trust and belief. (McCann, 2003, p. 950.) Resistance to change was also due to low morale and the feeling of hopelessness; like the efforts would be worthless. Although the organization had already shown that it could make changes and deal with them, a problem seemed to be that they were all "changed out". They felt that more and more changes were being imposed on them and that the only solution is that things remain the same and no more changes. (McCann, 2003, p. 949.) Management had the capability to implement change by helping the staff members to grab the initiative instead of having, or feeling, change imposed on them. They had access to consultants to help them do their jobs in implementing, training, and monitoring the changes. They could help people look outwardly at the organization instead of what they are used to doing-looking inwardly. Management also implemented Connect workshop events which allowed group discussions to work through difficult issues that directly affect their workplace. Connect workshops allowed the senior staff to converse with staff directly. (McCann, 2003, p. 948.) These group discussions to come up with solutions helped to reduce the blaming question of "why don't they fix it" Rapid changes were mostly seen in the work culture when this strategy was used. The Connect events were voluntary and it was up to each district whether or not they wanted to participate. (McCann, 2003, p. 947.) The author states on page 948 of his writing that, "The workshops provided a safe environment in which the participants could explore why some of the traditional behaviours

The Life-Threatening Experience :: essays research papers
I was a freshman in high school and invited to the biggest party an underclassman could attend. I had no reason to think that attending this party would put me in a life-threatening situation. I thought the party would be exciting and fun. Instead, it turned into a night that ends so tragically. One Friday night some friends and I decided to attend our high school's football game. Upon arriving, the stadium was already covered with overjoyed, and exciting fans. During the game, there was excited chattering about the party. Everyone was talking about going. Finally, the game was in the last seconds of the fourth quarter,a nd oru team was winning. The crowd was all fired up. When the game endend, everyone stampeded to theri cars and headed to the party leaving the once filled stadium deserted. When we finally arrived to the party, I could feel my body trembling with excitement and nervousness. It was a couple minutes after 10 pm and the party was already jumping off. Wehn entering the main room, you could see people dancing, clowning, and just having a good time. Althought the room wasn't that big, I begin to dance and enjoy myself as well. All of a sudden a fight broke out. You would have thought someone screamed free food the way everyone was running. People were falling all over the place trying to avoid the fight, but no one would break it up. When the fight was brought to a halt, everyone was ordered to leave. Everyone was stumbling trying to get out the house and to their cars, until one of the guys fighting decided the the issues wasn't resolved. He pushed his way back into the house, pulled out a gun and begins shooting. I was so close that I could hear the bullets flying by my ears, and I could see the sparks from the gun. I couldn't move; it was like someone turned my knees into the off position. Suddenly, I was pulled to the floor for protection. The shooting finally stopped. Everyone raced to their cars as if they were in a marathon. Out of nowhere, a low-pitched scream was heared. Two of my friends were found bleeding due to bullet wounds to the head.

Plants and Life on Earth Essay
Plants are the only organisms that can convert light energy from the sun into food. And plants produce allà of the food that animals, including people, eat. Even meat. The animals that give us meat, such as chickens and cows, eat grass, oats, corn, or some other plants. Plants make oxygen One of the materials that plants produce as they make food is oxygen gas. This oxygen gas, which is an important part of the air, is the gas that plants and animals must have in order to stay alive. When people breathe, it is the oxygen that we take out of the air to keep our cells and bodies alive. All of the oxygen available for living organisms comes from plants. Plants provide habitats for animals Plants are the primary habitat for thousands of other organisms. Animals live in, on, or under plants. Plants provide shelter and safety for animals. Plants also provide a place for animals to find other food. As a habitat, plants alter the climate. On a small scale, plants provide shade, help moderate the temperature, and protect animals from the wind. On a larger scale, such as in tropical rainforests, plants actually change the rainfall patterns over large areas of the earthââ¬â¢s surface. Plants help make and preserve soil In the forest and the prairie, the roots of plants help hold the soil together. This reduces erosion and helps conserve the soil. Plants also help make soil. Soil is made up of lots of particles of rocks which are broken down into very small pieces. When plants die, their decomposed remains are added to the soil. This helps to make the soil rich with nutrients. Plants provide useful products for people Many plants are important sources of products that people use, including food, fibers (for cloth), and medicines. Plants also help provide some of our energy needs. In some parts of the world, wood is the primary fuel used by people to cook their meals and heat their homes. Many of the other types of fuel we use today, such as coal, natural gas, and gasoline, were made from plants that lived millions of years ago. Plants beautify Plants, because of their beauty, are important elements of out human world. When we build houses and other buildings, we never think the job is done until we have planted trees, shrubs, and flowers to make what we have built much nicer.
